One night while working a post, an officer named Wilkins and I began discussing his unusual pastime of being an anonymous caretaker of forgotten rural cemeteries. Officer Wilkins would drive around the country side looking for unkempt graveyards on his days off. He would work the ones he found...clearing overgrowth and righting overturned stones...until it returned to its former serene self. He was quite skilled in finding unmarked graves or graves where the stones had fallen away with dowsing rods. He would return the stones to their rightful place or place small markers were there were none. Though to some his hobby may have seemed a bit morbid, I found it a fascinating and quite noble thing to do.
As the night wore on, however, our conversation did turn a bit darker. He knew I had an obsessive interest in the paranormal and was well on his way to impressing me with tales of times his work ran over into the evening hours when he would find himself alone in an overgrown cemetery in the middle of nowhere.
"Have you ever heard of the Bell Witch?" He asked. Well, of course, I had! He then told me that he was a member of the extended family and if I was "brave enough" he would take me on an informal midnight tour of the Bell Witch cave. Now this was a golden opportunity for an aspiring paranormal investigator. An uninterrupted investigation of the infamous Bell Witch? You might as well as handed me the Holy Grail! Unfortunately, I declined his offer. Bravery had nothing to do with it as I knew Ofc Wilkins had other interests in mind. Everything has a price, I suppose. I just wasn't interested in paying. Damned if I wouldn't have were it not for that. I would have stood in that cave in the dead of night and summoned the Witch. How about you? What drives us into the unknown cave to face the demons that hide in the darkness?
