Texas Gov. Abbott issues full pardon for Army sergeant who killed BLM protester

Okay so — I'm no big fanatic, but according to the article, the protester who was killed was legally carrying an AK-47 — no mention about it being fired or even that there was any threat or intention to fire it — at anyone. Given that there was a protest going on, how do we know it wasn't just for deterrence or self defense? Apparently there was a lot of other "evidence" to consider, but my question is: Is it legal to shoot someone dead for legally carrying a firearm? Or is it that whoever shoots first is in the right?
